Sevilla have confirmed that they have sacked manager Eduardo Berizzo and hope to have a new coach in charge after the winter break.

Berizzo was hired in the summer to replace Jorge Sampaoli who left to take over the Argentine national team.

He had previously managed Celta Vigo where he took them to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The club's statement mentioned the team's poor start to the season as the reason for Berizzo's dismissal.

Sevilla currently sit fifth in La Liga but they have played more games than the teams directly above and below them.

Berizzo recently returned to the club's dugout after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

  • Montella set to coach Sevilla after reaching agreement

Former AC Milan and Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella is set to take charge of Sevilla after reaching an agreement with the Liga club on Thursday.

Montella will replace Eduardo Berizzo who was sacked last Friday following a run of poor results, only a week after returning to work following an operation to treat prostate cancer.

Sevilla said that Montella would travel to Spain as soon as he had terminated his contract with AC Milan where he was fired as coach at the end of last month.

"Sevilla FC and the Italian coach Vincenzo Montella have reached an agreement for him to become coach of the first team until June 2019," said the club in a statement.

Montella, 43, is a former striker who played for Genoa, Sampdoria and AS Roma and also made 20 appearances for Italy.

His coaching career has included three seasons with Fiorentina, finishing fourth in Serie A in each, one with Sampdoria and one-and-a-half with Milan.

He will be the only Italian coach in La Liga, Gianni De Biasi having been fired by Alaves at the end of November.

Berizzo was sent packing despite Sevilla lying a respectable fifth in the table and having qualified for the last sixteen of the Champions League, where they will face Manchester United.

He replaced fellow Argentine Jorge Sampaoli who left after the end of last season to take charge of his country's national team.

  • Sevilla coach Eduardo Berizzo told players of cancer diagnosis during Liverpool match

Sevilla coach Eduard Berizzo told his players he is suffering from prostate cancer at half-time of the Champions League match against Liverpool, before his team came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3.

When Guido Pizarro scored an injury-time goal to equalise for the home side, the club's players ran to celebrate with their coach, and the club later confirmed a prostate cancer diagnosis after the match.

A club statement read: "The medical services of Sevilla FC report that the coach of the first team, Eduardo Berizzo, has been diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma (malignant tumour) of the prostate.

"The future examinations will allow us to decide which are the steps to follow regarding the treatment."
Liverpool took a 3-0 lead at half-time, but the Sevilla players were told of Berizzo's diagnosis which appears to have spurred them on to claim a point with a dramatic comeback.

After the match, midfielder Ever Banega told reporters: "We had to come out (after being 3-0 down at the break) with a different attitude, for the fans, who have always supported us, and also the coach, who has reversed our situation.

" He's the biggest fan we have. "
"He has taken us on the right path and we're with him all the way," he added in comments made before Berizzo's diagnosis had been made public.

Berizzo took over at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in the summer after spending three seasons at Celta Vigo, who he also played for between 2001-05.

  • Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla: Preview and Predictions

Game week 6 of Spanish Primera Division brings us an interesting duel between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

    Atletico Madrid

With 11 points, they are currently sitting at the 3rd place in the league table. They are coming from their third win for the season. They visited Athletic Bilbao and won with a score of 1-2. Correa, their top scorer, and Carrasco scored the two goals for Atletico Madrid. They’ve failed to score only once so far, in a goal-less draw away against Valencia.

Sevilla is coming from their fourth consecutive clean-sheets win. They hosted Las Palmas and won with a narrow 1-0 win. Navas was the scorer of the one goal in the match. So far, they scored only once more than one goal in a match. They are on a great streak, and are sitting at the 2nd place in the league table with 13 points.

Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla: Head to head

They have had 45 head to head encounters in total so far. It’s interesting that their wins and draws are equally divided. They both have 15 wins respectively and they drew 15 times. During the previous season, both teams won at their own turf. Atletico Madrid won at home with a score of 3-1. That was the only of their last 6 duels that saw both teams scoring.

    Atletico Madrid vs Sevilla: Prediction

Atletico Madrid have the advantage of the home turf and they are the favourites in this fixture. They won the last five matches they played at home. Also, they conceded 5 goals (never more than a goal per match) at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan since February. So, we believe the hosts will be happy with a narrow win, without allowing their opponents to score
