The Citizens were knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday night, a Fernando own goal the difference. That could have an adverse effect on their morale and they were easily beaten by the Saints last week too. That 4-2 defeat (Iheanacho 2) has opened the door for Man Utd and City need a win to more or less sew up 4th spot on Sunday. They are 4th in the table with 64 points, 4 ahead of Utd who have a game in hand.
Kompany limped off yet again in midweek and his fitness has to be a huge worry for City. Hart made some great saves in Madrid and he has kept 16 clean sheets this season. City have conceded 38 goals and Otamendi and Mangala will likely start at centre back on Sunday. Sagna and Clichy had tough games during the week but Pellegrini will probably stick with the two former Arsenal men against their old club. Kolarov and Zabaleta are other options on the flanks for City.
They have relied heavily on the goals of Aguero and he hasn’t let them down. He has 23 for the season and he is one of the best in the business. De Bruyne has proved to be a super signing and he has 6 goals and 9 assists. He will be even more important now with Silva (11 assists) out injured. Sterling (6 goals) is back fit but he has been disappointing. The bang in form Iheanacho could keep him on the bench on Sunday.
Probable line up: Hart; Sagna; Otamendi; Mangala; Clichy; Fernando; Fernandinho; De Bruyne; Iheanacho; Navas; Aguero.
The Gunners have been their usual selves this season, failing to produce the goods at vital times. 3 draws from 4 put paid to their hopes of a Premier League title and some fans have turned on Wenger. It is a vocal minority though and it would be a shock if he went in the summer. They struggled to a narrow 1-0 win vs Norwich last week, Welbeck with the winner. That sort of performance won’t suffice against City, and they are now 3rd in the table with 67 points. A win would guarantee them Champions League football next season.
They have mixed the good with the bad at the back but Cech has been solid enough. He kept their 17th clean sheet of the season vs Norwich and they have conceded 35 goals in total. Gabriel and Kosicelny have been inconsistent at times at centre back, though they did nothing wrong vs Norwich. Bellerin (4 assists) and Monreal will bomb forward down the flanks, but they need to put their defensive duties first vs City.
They have played some intricate attacking football and sometimes they overdo it in the final third. Giroud has 12 goals but he hasn’t scored in ages and he badly needs to end the drought. Luckily for the Gunners Sanchez is flying and he also has 12 goals, as well as 5 assists. Ozil has been the creator in chief with 18 assists, and he has also scored 6 goals. The likes of Iwobi, Welbeck and Walcott are other options up top for Wenger who has plenty of depth in his squad. If they play to their best they can get a positive result on Sunday.
Probable line up: Cech; Bellerin; Gabriel; Koscielny; Monreal; Elneney; Ramsey; Welbeck; Sanchez; Ozil; Giroud.
